Main attractions of Kasheli

Kasheli offers a rare combination of natural beauty and historical heritage. The places below are not to be missed.

Shri Kanakaditya Sun Temple

One of the few surviving Sun temples in India. The grand 80′ × 40′ assembly hall was gifted by the Mumbai philanthropist Nana Shankar Sheth, and the temple’s copper-plate grant confirms over 800 years of history. Full article →

Shri Lakshminarayan Temple

Held to be older than Kanakaditya itself and restored by Sambhaji Maharaj. A mysterious basement passage reportedly leads all the way to the sea shore.

The three-mile Konkan coastline

High cliffs, fragrant kewada groves and the unceasing sound of the surf. The villagers’ daily ritual is to climb the cliffs at sundown for the sunset view over the sea — described locally as “an unforgettable moment.” A delight for visitors as well.

The Desai Khar Bund

A 400-year-old seawater bund still doing the job it was built for, framed by gold paddy and green coconut-areca groves.

Shri Datta Mandir at Kasheli Bandh

The first Datta temple in the region, built by Swami Vishwanath Maharaj Borkar. The Datta Jayanti festival runs for six days, preceded by a seven-day continuous namasmaran with tambora.

Shri Jakhadevi and Shri Aagbadevi

Pilgrims travel from across Ratnagiri district for the Navaratri and annual festivals at these two ancient shrines.

Vithal Sitaram Gurjar Vidyamandir

The high school built in memory of the great Marathi short-story writer V.S. Gurjar — a living monument to Kasheli’s modern literary heritage.

All of the sites can be visited comfortably in a single day. The best season is October to March, after the monsoon.
